USING THE UCF TERMINAL SERVER

The UCF terminal server allows you to dial (via a phone modem or a data phone) into the mail server. Currently the terminal servers are either Cisco model 5100 servers with U.S. Robotics modems, or Cisco model 5200 servers with Microcom modems.

To communicate with the server, you need a terminal emulation package. You can use any package which supports VT100 emulation. Some available packages are Procomm for DOS and Windows, or the terminal program provided with Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or Windows NT.

The terminal server supports the SLIP and PPP protocols. Communicating via these protocols is for advanced users only and requires special software on your computer. See Getting a SLIP/PPP Connection To Your Computer.

ACCESSING THE TERMINAL SERVER

This section is for users who are accessing the terminal server with a phone modem.

Communication Parameters

The following communication parameters must be used:

Baud Rate : 28800, 14400, 9600, 2400, 1200, or 300
Duplex : FULL
Data Bits : 8
Stop Bits : 1
Parity : None
Flow : XON/XOFF
Terminal emulation : VT100

This server supports the LAP-M and MNP data compression and error correction protocols.

Connecting to the Terminal Server

Start your communications package and make sure it is set to the correct communications parameters (listed in the previous section). The dial-up phone numbers are:
(407)275-4200Main UCF campus and Orlando area
(407)513-4200Main UCF campus and Orlando area
(407)636-9985Brevard Area
(904)255-9906Daytona Area

If you successfully reach the University's modem line after dialing the above number, you should hear a high-pitched tone after 3-4 rings. If the phone continues to ring or if it answers and no tone is heard, you should hang up and try re-dialing. If these two conditions persist, call the E-Mail and Internet Help Desk at 823-5117 and press 1 to report a possible problem with dial-up access.

After successfully connecting to the terminal server, wait for the following prompt to appear:

Troubleshooting

If you are having difficulties using the terminal server, try the following:

ACCESSING THE TERMINAL SERVER VIA A ROLM DATAPHONE

If you have a ROLM Dataphone (model 120 V2 DCM II) in your office on campus, you can access the terminal server through the phone lines.

Communication Parameters

The following communication parameters must be used:

Baud Rate : 19200
Duplex : FULL
Data Bits : 8
Stop Bits : 1
Parity : None
Flow : XON/XOFF
Terminal emulation : VT100

Connecting to the Terminal Server

Start your communications package and make sure it is set to the correct communications parameters (listed in the previous section). If you got the package from Computer Services, it will be set up correctly. Go into terminal mode and press the <ENTER>key once or twice. The following message will appear:

DISCONNECTING FROM THE TERMINAL SERVER

To disconnect from the terminal server, do the following:

1. LOGOFF FROM PEGASUS! Failure to do so could leave your session still logged on and possibly hung. See "Logging Off From Pegasus"

2a. If you are accessing the terminal server with a phone modem, type the following at the prompt:

as5100-xx> hangup

2b. If you are using a Dataphone, type one of the following at the prompt:

CS> exit

or

CS> quit

or

CS> logout
